Home. The word had such a loose meaning for me now. I didn’t know where to call home anymore. Despite growing up in the human realm, and having friends and family there, it didn’t feel like a place I belonged anymore. Certainly not with my magic and knowledge of the supernatural. It was too small of a place for me to call home.

The Seelie court didn’t feel quite like home, either, or the Shadow court, or Margery’s little cottage in the Forest of Tears. Maybe I didn’t belong anywhere.

“Are things that bad?” I asked.

Flynn nodded, his face ashen. “You have no idea. Alathiel is trying her best, but without Soran’s alliance, a large part of her strength has been stripped away. For years, he has built up his own forces to side with the Seelie. That has changed.”

I swallowed the lump in my throat. It had changed because of me. I had left Soran and had refused to become his mate, even after agreeing to the union.

“There is something else, as well.” Flynn’s shoulders rose and fell in a deep breath. “Soran has joined with Ayella in an alliance.”

Ayella was Alathiel’s cousin. I still remembered her cold smirk and the vile, underground blood market she had. The woman had helped kidnap or coerce fae to feed the vampires hiding beneath the city. Fae blood was like steroids for vampires. There had even been rumors it would help them to walk in the daylight.

“He is providing fae to the Unseelie vampire army. Seelie, mostly young women, are being taken left and right by his men.”

My blood ran cold. I knew Soran had his ambitions, but even I didn’t think he would stoop so low. Those poor women. Most would never see their friends or family again. An even greater number of them would likely not live long, either, not with an army of ravenous vampires waiting for them across the Seelie border.

I closed my burning eyes and took a slow breath. “When I left, I knew Soran would be angry, but I didn’t think he would embark on something so traitorous. I thought he would keep his alliance with Alathiel. He’d been planning to side with her long before I came into the picture. Besides, he has hopes to usurp his mother. Why would he turn around and help her?”

Flynn settled back against the couch. “Men have done far worse when they are scorned by those they love.”

“This is my fault,” I mumbled.

“Nonsense.” Margery pointed at me. “You had every right to flee that dark prince. He wanted to use you and your magic. He didn’t really care for you.”

I thought back to the quiet conversations with Soran, the kisses we had shared, and his touch. He had been kind to me, and protective. Perhaps even he hadn’t realized the poison he had been leaking into our union.

“Actually, I think he really does. Or did. That probably only makes it worse. It wasn’t just his plans with my magic that he lost, but me.
